All you need to know about Height Gauges

The clues in the name – height gauges are a device used to measure the height of an item or workpiece and can be used to make repeated markings on a part.

As shown in the below diagrams, height gauges are comprised of several different parts. The main elements that are consistent across every gauge are:

Beam:

On vernier height gauges, measurements are taken using the two engraved scales, imperial and metric, on the vertical beam. Digital height gauges have a dual beam that aids the slider movement.

Slider:

This precision measuring tool operates with a sliding measuring stylus which moves along a vertical axis relative to a measuring scale on a beam. As the stylus slides up or down, the readings on electronic gauges are displayed on a measuring slider mounted on the beam. Whereas, on vernier gauges, the sliders feature a scale for taking measurements.

Fixing device:

Generally, a scriber, test indicator, or touch probe is used to assist in marking out the measurement on the workpiece and is connected to the slider via the fixing device. They are often a popular instrument for quality control purposes.

Base:

Height gauges are typically used on a heavy surface plate with an accurately flat, smooth underside. The sturdy base ensures that the height gauge is stable when measuring to maintain an accurate reading.

Height Gauges vary in a number of ways, just like micrometers and calipers. Here are the main differences between the different types:

  • Vernier Height Gauges – Both imperial and metric scales are typically shown on the beam, and they are available in a wide range of sizes.
  • Dial Height Gauges – They offer easier reading than a vernier scale with the dial but are only available in sizes under 12”.
  • Digital Counter Height Gauges – Minimising the time needed to layout the part with dial and dual-digit counters. They are easy to read and allow one counter to be set at the reference datum and the other to be used as a floating zero.
  • Electronic Height Gauge – A sophisticated tool with high accuracy and features including inch/metric conversion, absolute zero and floating zero, and data output. More advanced models also have additional features which further strengthen the accuracy.

Our height gauges range up to 0-1,000mm/40″, as well as a resolution from 0.0001 and accuracy from ±0.05mm. We stock leading brands such as Mitutoyo, Sylvac, Moore & Wright, and more, as well as own M-DRO and M-SURE branded products.
